Maybe the little alterations are a bit of a surprise the first time, but after you watch it a couple of times it really grows on you. She did a great job. Oh and that silence before "And the rocket's red glare" - really packs a punch!

Perhaps we can forgive Clive a little grouchy old man behaviour, many of Karen's songs have a deceptive twist of bitters, but perhaps in the twilight one prefers swan songs, rather than a painful reminder of life in full roar.

Come on Clive, and others! I think you are a bit past it to 'get' what is happening here.
That is a wonderful, brave thrilling performance by an incredible live performer under intense pressure, and she totally nailed it.
Whether or not you like the style, she totally nailed her performance, and I think the whole point of this delivery from Lady Gaga was actually subverting this type of big vocal diva acrobatics, and so subvert the whole charade of American nationalism, and I thought she parodied the corny vacuous superficial American nationalism one so often sees, and replaced it with something deeper, more nuanced, filled with love and respect- and as a woman placed herself as human right of the centre of a ver y male -dominated moment- and blew it apart. And she pulled it off intelligently, beautifully and courageously. I have never heard her sing like that, or the Star Spangled banner sung nearly so movingly and powerfully. To do something so artistically interesting, and technically challenging under that pressure is truly fantastic. Go on GaGa!

Gaga has surprising depth, the flashy opulence of her dressy exterior is only a facade of vulgarity. Not having watched any singing of that anthem I'm unsure of what a good rendition is, and I don't plan on starting now, but Gaga is a little dada.

Sorry Clive but having just watched Lady Gaga's performance on YouTube I found it extraordinary, her phrasing wonderful and the meaning and emotion she uncovered, making an old and much performed song sound new, was the sign of a great performer.

I found Lady Gaga's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner moving and so did a number of black players if the roving camera can be trusted. Gaga was approaching the song in the style of an African American Blues singer. She loved to sing along with Whitney Houston as a child. Why so snide? Why so petty? You are choosing to write in the old style of British journalism Clive. Sneering really doesn't make you sound clever. You should try to be more investigative.
