I mean, I was wondering why they are going more and more urban with their music when they started pop and urban is not big worldwide... Then I realized they actually tried recently to go more pop or not urban with 4 and 45s/ao2.. With mixed results...

It seems they need the urban radio support to succeed now, so they have to do urban music...

It's so odd though, I think the same happened with Janet, Mariah, Whitney.... Aft a while, pop kind of banned them and they had to rely on urban more and more...

I wouldn't say that pop has abandoned them, but I do think Urban listeners have a greater appreciation for them than pop listeners. Also, I think both Bey and Rih always wanted to be urban artists, but I'm not sure if they had enough control over their careers to make the jump, but I think they now have the platform and fan base to put whatever genre they want, and they are choosing urban music.

I don't think Rihanna wanted to be urban... When asked about her favourite music, she always mentions pop rock like Bon jovi or the guys of use somebody... In the vogue interview she was listening and singing to chandelier...

They have the power to do whatever they want at this point and it's pretty obvious they both prefer to make urban music over pop.

More than half of Bey's hits are urban, have been urban, have charted on urban, and are recognized as urban from the beginning of her career. So I have no idea what you're talking about.
