Yeah, Sharia laws are very strict and Muslims here are very sensitive for some issues especially LGBT. Some artists will be dragged even by their fans if she/he did something against Islam.

I think it's because we aren't as strict as you guys are in general. And yes they can.

But they have to get married outside the country and then get back to Indonesia and the government will officially recognize their marriage. My grandma is a Muslim and she's married to a Christian from Australia, for example. They were married in Melbourne but have been living in Jakarta most of their lives.

I came from a Muslim family, so I'm of Muslim culture. But I don't practice it anymore and identify myself as an Atheist now. But I still celebrate Eid-Al Fitr and stuffs for cultural reasons. And yes, she is still a Muslim. Though she's not that of a devout Muslim.

But you could be gay in Japan and get no hate. You could be anything (dress/live wacky). And generally inter familial bonds aren't that strong in Japan compared to the West, especially emotionally, so it's no big deal if your parents disapprove (on both sides).

Japan is definitely a lot more ahead w LGBT issues than say Korea/China, but given its economic development/standing, it's social development should be a lot higher.
