It is not necessarily saying that smarter people have less friends, but that smarter people do not want to spend as much time hanging out with friends as other people do, because they need their alone time as well. Sounds more like a description of introverted people though.

The bigger concern is that people keep doubting this when it's a scientifically validated study.
Like, sure, you can say it's wrong - but you'd be, um, wrong! Obviously there are outliers and exceptions. There are of course people who are extremely intelligent and are also personable enough to have a significant amount of friends, without being dissatisfied with life. There are also a decent number of people with no friends who happen to be rather dim. This is just about statistical trends!
