“I woke up [after the Grammys] to messages saying: ‘You fat whale, that award should have gone to Tori Kelly, give it back.’ These people can be ruthless. I try not to read online comments as they can be really hurtful.”
Does the reigning queen of self-acceptance still suffer from insecurities herself?
“All the time,” she says candidly. “I went into a store recently to buy a winter jacket, and the only size I could get into was an XL. Even that barely fit. People always tell me: ‘You’re not even that big!’ But moments like that can sting. I left the shop feeling sad and p****d off.”
But these pangs of self-doubt never last long, and Meghan knows exactly how to boost her confidence when it needs a bit of a kick-start.
A talented songwriter, she started penning lyrics at an age when her friends were still playing with Barbies, and wrote All About That Bass (sample lyrics: “I got that boom boom that all the boys chase, and all the right junk in all the right places”) purely for herself.
“When I was writing the words, I thought: ‘I wish I felt like this.’ I just wrote it to help me. Singing it over and over again to myself and then hearing the fans sing it back actually made me believe it. It started to change the way I felt about myself.
