At the same time, they have a lot of leverage because of the Syrian crisis so the EU and them currently have a tug of war. Erdogan will definitely gain a lot in the near future even if it's not a space in the EU.

Turkey should just split in half. Everyone that wants to work together and be peaceful can join the EU half, and the rest of them can rot in with their dictator/president and completely illogical approach to civil rights and the internet in the other half.
Erdogan has gotta go for that. And they need to stop oppressing their press and chill with the human rights abuses. I think them joining the EU would make that happen faster.

Well I am turkish and whenever I'm in Turkey everything is fine. So your unnecessary remarks about Turkey 24/7 are literally invalid. Yes, the president sucks but people are still doing whatever they want to. As far as I know (and I must know better than you) everyone uses Twitter and Facebook. Literally every single soul.
