I also think culture and musical background plays a big role in it too..Urban music is (gospel, blues, soul, rnb, jazz) is EXTREMELY vocal based..it's like rhythm, melody, harmony, and the ability to vocalize our musical thoughts so vividly with our voices/ornaments is something that a lot of african american musical circles LIVE for!!

#reciepts Kim Burrell tribute (these are audience members and artists basically making up songs with full melodies, lyrics and backing chords on the spot with only their voices..

I don't think lyrics and production are NEARLY as important to us as other genres (EDM, COUNTRY, POP etc) compared to the way we utulize our own instruments "voice"..some foot tapping, a lil 3 chord harmony to keep a basic structure and we go ham!! It's also why black artists have such an affinity for vocal improv..

Looking at my faves list, I don't seem to prefer weak vocalists but I'll tolerate their vocal shortcomings if they have good music and know how to work with what they have.

It doesn't matter if that singer has big vocal, normal vocal or weak one.

I'm not that into power vocals. I like Madge because the concept of her music is always interesting, and she always delivers good music.

Rather have my goath-like vocals fave which keeps making great music instead of... Demi...

OT : Not necessarily. I like so many artists and some of them are not vocalists, it depends on their material.

Singers like Taylor make up for their weak vocals with stronger melodies, so I can see why people would be drawn to them.

I'll use Taylor as a prime example. She's an average singer, but her song-writing and artistry is so emotive she can easily pull it off. She obviously knows a lot about music, and plays instruments.

It's great if you have amazing vocal abilities, but if you have no input in your music (your art!) then I don't see the point personally. Besides, vocal acrobatics never interest me.

I prefer certain tones. The strength of the voice, while nice when greater, isn't particularly consequential to me. My favorites would be like Kylie, early Gaga, Kerli, Madonna - that type.
