BFI Flare names the top 30 LGBT films of all time
In celebration of this year’s 30th BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival, the British Film Institute have released a list of the top 30 LGBT films of all time.
Coming in at number one is the award-winning Carol, a moving romantic-drama about a New York City lesbian couple in the 50s, which received rave reviews and critical acclaim.
The film saw stand-out performances from Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and was nominated for six Oscar awards and nine BAFTAs, although it walked away empty-handed from both.
Taking second place is Andrew Haigh’s Nottingham-based Weekend, followed by Hong Kong drama Happy Together, directed by Wong Kar-wai, in third place.
Todd Haynes, director of Carol, said: “I’m so proud to have Carol voted as the top LGBT film of all time in this poll launched for the Fest’s 30th edition.
“Carol is in illustrious company with so many films I love, from Brokeback Mountain and Un Chant d’Amour to Happy Together and My Own Private Idaho.”
Over 100 film experts including filmmakers, critics, writers, and programmers voted for their favourite films in the poll, which sees inclusions from 12 countries across 84 years of cinema.
