Yup! They've been this way forever. But they have to be: none would watch if most of the actual best songs/albums of any given year were the nominees because most people wouldn't have heard of them. Making it all about the most popular music (with the occasional niche pick thrown in here and there) guarantees maximal viewership.

Yeah, that's true. But I kind of wish they could find a happy middle. Like, invite the relevant artists to perform their big hits so that viewers will tune in but don't ALSO give them all the awards. Or at least save some awards for obscure artists who deserve them and just don't air them if they're ratings poison. Didn't the Oscars only air like 8 awards?
