I'm not gonna argue a pointless argument, both of those songs, especially the first one, are on key vocally.

Im down with Courntey but please, her croaking? All I was getting at really though was that shes not even remotely a technically "good" vocalist. She has a voice that works with what she does. She makes it. All I was saying was that someone doesn't have to belt like Beyonce to be considered worthy of making music.

You really think Lou Reed's intonation is perfect at @ 0:24 in "Here She Comes Now"? He is off-key. Let's not act like his pitch was perfect most of the time.

She’s one of the most popular singers ever though, so it really hasn’t affected her potential, but what it does do is lower the respect people have for you and makes you seem more like a product who is only able to sound good in certain circumstances. There perhaps is an argument to be made about sounding “real” and showing flaws to not seem like a product, but being off key sounds more like a product defect than Kelly Clarkson getting choked up on stage and perhaps not hitting a certain note, etc.

See thats exactly the mindset I dont agree with though. I think Rihannas output visually, musically, etc is all cool. I think she brings something to the table. If shes not the strongest vocalist, but she makes her music work for her and not just be some vanilla artist like Kelly Clarkson, as your example, than I really dont think it matters. I'd rather see Rihanna live with everything she has to offer and maybe not be the strongest vocalist than sit through an American Idol winning Kelly Clarkson borefest you know? Im not knocking people that put their interest in artists for their vocal histrionics, if thats what you look for than fine. Thats just not all im looking for, I want someone thats interesting.

This isn't about being the strongest vocalist it's about being on-key aka the simplest most basic thing a singer should be able to do

yeah "on-key". this thread is actually about people that put all emphasis on vocals vs. people that don't.

ill give you Nico, but yes Ive always felt that Lou Reed never went off key. Maybe specific instances but not consistently.

One primary person that was never mentioned was Jeff Magnum of Neutral Milk Hotel. On recordings, he was off key consistently. Hence why I dont like them.

I created this thread I think I know what it's about. It's not about vocalists, belters, dancing, entertainers, or trying. It's simply about people classifying themselves as singers when they cannot produce noise out of their mouth that is on-key.

I say yes because I want people like Taylor, Rihanna or Katy to stay.
They are terrible singers but they have good tones and release some bops. I just don't want to go to their concert or watch them perform live.

I won't spend my time listening to those who can't properly sing but I don't think they deserve to flop or be overlooked. In the end, music is subjective and exist to entertain people. Some people will get pleasure and feel something from those who can't properly sing, and it's totally fine.

lol I won't say they shouldn't be famous but they certainly shouldn't be called a professional singer or vocalist. Titles like pop star, recording artist, pop performer, and the like are fine though.
What peeves me is when you play an instrument (especially a piano) yet you can't find the damn key. Like, how Sway??!!
