And a lot of the educated Black people here are against it! So who do we listen to? The ones that aren't thinking or the ones that realize this is a pretty harmful tradition? But everytime someone does speak up some white person tells him to "go back to his country"..........
Zwarte Piet was a black Moorish servant and that's how he was depicted in old children's books. Nothing's changed except the story. Apparently it's just soot, but that doesn't explain the red lips and afro hair.
It's racist, end of story. But if the Surinamese/black people here aren't going to speak up and protest, than I have no business to either, so... too bad.
I stopped celebrating Zwarte Piet when I was 12 cause I knew exactly what it was.
