I'm not trying to discredit Britney's impact. Enough people were excited about her involvement and sent the remix to #1.

I'm just admitting that the whole thing was a bit of a farce and everyone knows it. Realistically nobody will look back and say "remember that Britney hit S&M!"

E.T. was remixed upon release and was a 5-week #1, Katy's longest-charting hit (at the time) and the fourth-biggest hit of 2011 according to Billboard. Hardly undeserved.

Last Friday Night was also a multi-week #1, the original still outsold the Missy remix during its first week at #1 (unlike Rihanna's S&M or Britney's Till The Worlds End, for example, where 60%+ of sales came from the remix) and less than 1% of sales came from the remix during LFN's second week at #1.

The ones that peak at #1 in their debut week, but then drop like a rock. It's one thing to stay consistent but the songs that notably drop after peaking at #1 for a week are embarrassing.

The ones that are HEAVILY, heavily influenced by their inclusion in "viral videos", but lack sales or radio play

Harlem Shake being the most obvious. I remember there was this one song that was in some "strangers kiss strangers" video that went viral and it debuted at 9 and then completely fell off the chart a week later. a MESS. I've always had a lowkey hatred for Billboard when they heavily incorporated streaming into their methodology. Songs like "Watch Me Whip/Nae Nae" stay in the Top 5 forever when they lack sales.

The ones that use rent-a-rapper tactics to snatch the #1 for a week or two

S&M, Last Friday Night, Bad Blood, E.T.

And the ones that are just freaking terrible and don't deserve it because they're awful songs

Work, Cheerleader, Rude, Whistle, Black and Yellow, Crank That Soulja Boy, Laffy Taffy (this one is the most tragic tbh ), Grillz (who even remembers this song)???

I don't think there's undeserving #1 songs since they go #1 for a reason. The only cases is say it's a shame they go #1 is if it's not #1 on sales nor streaming and many songs back in the day were #1 for long ass time just because of AirPlay now that's such a damn shame and lots would've peaked higher if the hot 100 wasn't the AirPlay hot 100 in the early 2000s.
