African Americans have far more platforms and influence in the media and the entertainment industry, an Asian would never win an Oscar or even be invited to host one to be able to talk about the problems that their community faces. Of course Chris Rock was not obliged to bring up other POC, but its pretty disappointing to see that given the opportunity to speak for + help other minorities in the entertainment industry as well as his own, he chose to focus on solely people of his own race while bringing others down with racist punchlines.

Eh, not really. A black person will likely have where they are from. So a black American only has the US as their platform. While an Asian person has a wider market outside their country. Which doesn't come as a surprise when many Asians in Asian markets are actors or singers are American. Same with Latinos they have a wide market. An American Latino can focus on th huge Latin market and never pay attention to the US. While blacks have a market that only blacks primarily participate in. Not many non-blacks watch Bet or Tyler Perry movies.

Good point. There are a ton of Korean American artists who had to take their careers to Korea to become popular once they couldn't make it here. But many Asian Americans see America as their rightful home too, and there are often too many cultural/language barriers in place for them to go back to their homeland. They are severely underrepresented in literally every form of American media and suffer from it.

Yes, and even if they get representation they'll get the token character treatment. You may see blacks having so many roles but they're always playing slaves, criminals, drug addicts or any low stereotypical role. Asians will be in a similar boat, this will just inflame the stereotypes of them.

The only way is to take the initiative and not depend on white Hollywood for the roles. Doesn't help that Asians in general make a very small minority.

Umm black people are not the policemen of the world. We can't fight for everyone.
Sit up and put in the work like we have. Asians especially are notorious for keeping mum on race issues, so why is this an issue now?

it really doesn't matter to latinos outside of the ones in Hollywood tbh. we would rather discuss The Dream act, fair wages for workers in the service sector and representation in city councils,school boards and other leadership roles. you know things that affect our daily lives.

And so what do you think? That black people don't discuss and try to make moves on issues bigger than movies? All of the progress that's been made in this country and worldwide for DECADES is all the proof you need that that's not true. Trying to spin a narrative that blacks aren't really doing anything but complaining is not going to work when proof of the work being done is right there for everyone to see.

There are big issues and there are smaller issues and they all deserve attention and you know what if you were gonna try to make the point that other minorities don't care about this kind of stuff then maybe you should have done it in a thread that wasn't started by a non-black minority and didn't have posts from non-black minorities who are clearly feeling some type of way because they feel that they're not being represented enough.

yes you're right you guys have accomplished a lot of feats however don't make it seem like you guys are the only ones or that the other races aren't doing enough bc thats as problematic as white opression

Why are black people being blamed for wanting justice for their issues? Other minorities are not going through the same intensity of systematic and social racism that black people are

Nothing about my post was problematic. If you really wanna talk problematic we can talk about the numerous posts I've seen in the Oscars/Chris Rock threads from non-black minority posters who brazenly go on about how much better their people are because "we don't complain" or "we only complain about REAL stuff" and berate blacks for speaking out on what affects us.

maybe if we didn't hear in the first place how you guys aren't obligated to help us, be the middle man and that we need to do more stuff you wouldn't hear that..... like, you get what you give, don't you?

I think it has something to do with the history of oppression the African American community has had to endure and continues to endure nowadays; I'm talking about slavery, the civil right movement, police shootings, etc.

Of course, other minorities have to deal with racism, (that awful joke with the Asian kids was out of place ) and as someone mentioned, native americans have also been victims of a horrible history of violence and oppression. Perhaps with a latin, asian or native american host, the issue would have been handled differently.

It's a complicated problem and I don't want to get very deep into it, but I am absolutely sure African Americans are in no way mean spirited and they do not all share that "is not our responsibility to speak up for everyone else, especially since they wouldn't and don't speak up for us" attitude.
