Why do Black Americans still follow the one drop rule?
I've always considered it a really disgusting "rule" and it comes from such a bad time in history, it's like one drop of black blood and you're automatically tainted so I don't get why some black Americans still use it?
I guess bc most times biracial people aren't seen as "white" by white ppl (most of them just look like normal lightskinned blacks anyway) so they fall back on their AA side, who are generally more accepting.
That said, I think the one drop rule is a dumb, outdated concept. Mixed people are mixed, no need to pretend otherwise. You are what you look like anyway.

It's not mandatory and I don't think black biracial people should be pressured to self identify as just one race if they don't want to do so; however, I do think biracial black people that choose to self identify as black -- whatever their reasons may be -- should be respected and not questioned or dismissed because people don't feel like they look "black enough" to call themselves black.

Yeah I agree with OP, this isn't the 1800s anymore. Why not just identify with biracial or mixed? Regardless, in a few centuries biracial people will be the majority and won't feel like they're misunderstood anymore or whatever.
