Taylor, obviously. Better writer, better musician, and since the 1989 era, better vocalist.
When people talk about Taylor being disingenuous but say nothing about Katy I think they both are, but Katy is moreso. She seems so calculated and I buy the rumors that she's overly competitive and willing to screw people over for her benefit.

It's so funny to me because as a stan of both and as someone who's heard interviews describing their songwriting process, it's actually so clear Katy is the more calculated one - and this is from someone who loves them both equally.
Like Katy is literally all about the hit and how it can do on the charts. Taylor's a genuine songwriter who learned how to monetize her craft - but Katy's the one who realized she could write hits and has capitalized on that. There's nothing Katy does that isn't just as calculated as Taylor, if not more so.
Especially because Katy's plan was so clearly about establishing herself commercially before any actual artistic exploration - which is in stark contrast to Taylor, whose artistry actually melds into her attempts to be more commercial. They both play the same wannabe Girl-Next-Door American-Dream Pop Girl stock character. Taylor just happens to do better because America is more endeared to her and she actually built her fanbase with a solid demographic. Katy has more problems with that because she wasn't the same age as her core demographic at any point in her career.
I think they're both great artists with a talent for the pure pop path - but Taylor really blends her artistry in a way Katy seems hesitant to do. Let's put it in movie terms - Taylor and Katy are kind of like directors with the potential to make blockbusters every single time but only Taylor feels the need to make sure the blockbuster MEANS something - Katy just wants the blockbuster and is willing to sacrifice every inch of depth if it means another $ in her pocket.
I don't care for either and both seem annoying, but Taylor because she seems like a hard worker and even though I find her music too vanilla for my tastes, I actually feel like her heart goes into her material, and it feels genuine.
Katy doesn't seem like she would even listen to her own music, and there's something that feels very cynical about her as a pop act. Plus, her sense of humor just seems kind of mean spirited even though she probably doesn't want it to come off that way.
