I agree with this. Rock definitely does have the most appeal for whatever reason (see Mumford & Sons winning AOTY). Rockism is real and ironically, rock is probably the most creatively stagnant genre right now.
I'm sure as time goes on, there will be more R&B/hip/hop nominated. Though, I also see your point about the necessity for a huge pop single to appeal to a wider demographic.
