How would you define virginity? Would you say that not being a virgin means having been engaged in any sexual act with anyone or does the act need to involve some sort of penetration?

This especially concerns homosexual relations. Physically, there is literally no difference in stimulating a sexual act with a ***** and having someone else do it from behind. What was the term invented for and why is it used?

Also, the broader sense of the question. Why is being a virgin or not so important for some people and some cultures? It's a social construct, but I honestly don't understand how it's important or relevant anyhow.
