Again, your whole post is a lot of wishful thinking. I think you're so passionate about this because you identify with their dilemma and want your sexuality to be ambiguous. Sure, the world definitely isn't black or white, but it's not as ambiguous as you're hoping it to be and I don't mind calling a spade a spade. The last few lines of your first paragraph cover it eloquently. There are definitely a lot of intricacies involved in identifying as gay and that's the issue here. Most people want to avoid it in real life and it's probably a hundred times more difficult to be assertive about it when you're a public figure. Ricky admitted that he's gay to his mother when she confronted him about it he was 20, but ran back into the closet and couldn't actually say until his late 30s. Regardless of the reasons and sensitivities involved, it'll always be rationalization.
As for this helping to "push our society forward" or "progressive and intelligent," I don't see how. These statements are just like what Elton John, George Michael and Darren Hayes made before explicitly coming out. If anything would help, it's being totally explicitly truthful and unapologetic about it. Minorities always want majority approval and that's not progressive.

But you don't
know they're not though. Sure, maybe George Michael and Ricky Martin were. Just because other gay celebs said it and then backtracked on it years later doesn't mean that everyone who says this is automatically lying. How do you know he isn't being truthful about how he feels about his sexuality? Maybe he feels occasional attraction to women but he's only ever been with men so far.

MonsterPaw is right. This sounds a lot like the people who claim that bisexuality doesn't exist. Sexuality is full of grey areas from 100% straight to 100% gay, and it just goes back to the whole 'intricacies' thing. People can and do create their own experiences all the time and it doesn't help anyone to stigmatize and attack people for actually vocalizing it.
But the reason why I think that celebs making these statements about their sexuality is progressive and helpful is because kids and fans who look up to them will hear it, and it could provide encouragement to the ones who may feel that way too. And it creates a discussion around a subject people tend to be very ignorant and close-minded about.
