When Red was released I didn't think that anything could ever come close to its Holiness. I mean, it has All Too Well, State of Grace, Holy Ground, Begin Again, etc... However, I've come to the conclusion that 1989 is a better ALBUM. 1989 tells a cohesive story. Red attempts this but doesn't necessarily succeed. 1989 is also more cohesive lyrically and sonically. Red's lyrics are fantastic, but they are like a quilt. Subject matters range from heartbreak to fame to Edith Freaking Kennedy. 1989 varies subjects without bringing up random topics. Also, the production on 1989 is far superior to mostly acoustic guitar.
If the OP asked which album has the more highlights I'd probably say Red because it contains the best lyric Taylor has ever written (ATW bridge), but as an album Red just isn't better than 1989.
