Obviously they have to take chart success and popularity somewhat into account. If they only nominated and awarded relatively unknown indie acts just because they have phenomenal music nobody would watch the ceremony
Would the Grammy's have nominated 1989 for album of the year if it flopped? When was the last time they gave a pop album album of the year when it flopped.
NO they would not have. Same with Adele's 21.
