Depends entirely on who's telling the joke. They can be funny but very few have that comedic prowess, so most of the time they're just tacky, trashy and try-hard.

In French we have classic jokes about dead people (Jane Of Arc, Claude François...)
Those jokes can be either very funny or totally awkward.
