No / Never, except in the case of legacy acts. Some leeway is afforded in other genres but generally speaking only the zeitgeistiest of mainstream albums get nods in the major categories.

When an album is successful it's because a lot of people liked it, sometimes you see a lot of people in the committee liked it too.

Last year's winner was like the biggest flop in the category, Daft Punk won over Taylor Swift herself with like half of her sales.

I'm not even a Taylor Swift stan, I don't know what people sees in her, but apparently the GP loves her, the critics too, so I'm not surprised the Grammys do too.

But thats popularity you are describing which is objectively measured by how many people buy your album aka album sales and chart position. Grammy literally say their choice is not based on popularity at all but on music excellence and quality.

Maybe 50% of the time they honour charts & success more than quality. Usually politics backstage and in Nashville have more of an influence on who wins.

Of all the Pop Vocal Album submissions, Lana had the highest MC score yet didn't receive a single nomination for Honeymoon. This should tell you how little The Grammys care about honouring excellence.
