"Dope" was a great song, but the recording could have been a bit better. She's adopted this really horrible, coarse guttural tone. "Til It Happens to You" (which is so ****ing manipulative and disturbing as a song, along with The Hunting Ground which I'm glad has been discredited beyond doubt at this point) is really, really bad. But "Dope" showed she's not totally lost in the songwriting department.

She's "slaying" because she has a new, extremely aggressive and efficient management team who is getting her all these amazing gigs. Doing all these events is pretty much unprecedented, this is next-level media coverage, a concerted attempt at recalibrating her star. But it will all be for nothing if they don't get the lead single right. But if they get it right (and I mean a "Hung Up"-level comeback glorious smash) then she has a shot at getting her cool back.
