Singing the National Anthem isn't an "opening act" for the halftime show. It's a football game, and singing a song like the national anthem before sporting events is something that has been doing for hundreds of years throughout history. It's not about the singer, it's about the song....the singer's job is to do it justice, and any extra praise is just a bonus....Gaga is lucky to have done a stellar job and gotten tons of praise.
It's insulting to our National Anthem to refer to it as an "opening act" to a completely entertainment based halftime show. It diminishes the meaning and importance the song has.
And all of that aside, Gaga and Beyonce are two different artists with two different career trajectories. They had completely different performances in the show.....one of which had to do a good job and do justice to the most important and one of the oldest songs of this Country, while the other had to deliver an entertaining performance of whatever material they wanted. It's so dumb to compare them.

!! Like, the thinly veiled passive aggressive racism is evident in half of those comments.
Why would Gaga want bigots supporting her?

Rather have the honor to sing the national anthem and nailing it than bopping on grass and not even being a headliner.

Gaga got good reviews....but she was not praised like that or even close to overshadowing anybody like she gave an epic Whitney Houston level rendition. lets get real.
the article told no lies

Right! And the audacity of some trying to compare Gaga's lukewarm rendition to Whitney's legendary rendition of the National anthem (the standard) was just ridiculous.

You obviously didn’t listen to the song, nor have you listened closely. Let me help you though.
Beyoncé proclaims she is proud of her nose and proud of her daughters afro, you got that. But there is also empowerment in her celebration of her black southern culture. She directly addresses this with her lines “My Daddy Alabama, Momma Louisiana, you mix that negro with that creole make a Texas bama”. In that line, she clearly positions herself as a woman of the south and a proud woman of negro and creole descent. This is powerful for someone to say because as we all know, the south is still incredibly racist. It was the centre of slavery and the topic of the civil war. Her people may be free, but are they? She empowers them through her own story. She proclaims, "I dream it, I work hard, I grind 'til I own it", a reference to the American dream which black people are so often cut off from and yet she encourages people with "Get what's mine (take what's mine)". She goes on to mention “albino alligators”, a clever double entendre referencing the predatory white “haters” or supremacy, as well as the Albino Alligator on display in New Orleans (and perhaps a reference to the slur “alligator babies”). Her use of “I slay” is not only personally empowering, but references the true meaning of slaying. She is calling her black ladies to join her, and slay the white patriarchy, slay racism, slay hatred and injustice. She calls them to formation, not only for a dance, which is a highly cultural ritual, but also in a militaristic way. In this she is asking for everyone to join as one community, show her the co-ordination, and prepare for the fight ahead. The lyric “get in formation” can also be read as “get information”, calling her black sisters to remain educated, aware and active in what is going on.
So for you, you may not have heard all this, because to you it may not feel needed. That’s probably why you feel its based on capitalization. However, the song was released for free, and continues to be released for free. Her message is being put out there. Whether she benefits from it in the long run or not, I feel acknowledging the message is truly more important than wondering how sincere she is, because the fact is, the message is important. It’s imperative. And it's bigger than what you feel about Beyoncé herself.

??? I didn't dissect the comments, but there doesn't really seem to be much "thinly veiled" racism in the comments. I don't doubt that there are racist Bey haters, but who's to judge based off profile pictures and poorly written FB posts?
Gaga's getting lauded for acing THE American standard, not something most performers can do, especially one who had to overcome so many preconceptions like Gaga. Beyhive shouldn't take it so personally, considering Gaga & others have gotten the same treatment in years past.

Not Swissman coming thru and gathering the bitter gurls with intellect
It's interesting how most of the Gaga stans wanna cry foul but when Gaga was at her brief peak, and other female artists were being compared and dragged by the media shortcomings, where was the outrage? Where was female unity parade at?!? Spare me the crocodile tears and fake outrage. Truth be told, this bitterness steaming from the monsters has been Boling since Self title came out and outperformed Artpop. Let's not forget all the antics and ugliness thrown at Katy by the monsters, the minute she outperformed Gaga on the charts with Prism.

? Gaga during her peak was also subject to the most media/social outrage. Lest we forget the millions of views garnered by "Lady Gaga hermaphrodite" videos?
It's not a competition at this point, anyways. Both girls are doing fine by anyone's standards.
