I would have been ok with no lipsyncing if the video actually had a plot, but it's just really frustrating because I know Lana has potential to make amazing videos, she just doesn't care anymore.
Like, I feel like there were other songs where this video would work perfectly.
I'm playing the video over Honeymoon right now and it fits so well so far.
I think everything is supposed to be an illusion, he's crazy and on an acid trip? i think that.
Either that or it's similar to Jonestown hence the koolaid. The girls could signify other cult members or could be a hallucination from the koolaid. The part where Lana and Father John Misty were dancing was them in heaven also the part where they're all swimming, I think
Outside of the scene in the cabin and the random talking scenes, it was really beautifully shot. The concept of the cult I love as well. But I wish the plot would be a lot more obvious and not so stuck. I'm sure there were more scenes to choose from, but then again she might have been lip syncing to Ultraviolence in them.
The underwater part that seems like "heaven" is beautiful too. But it should have been way shorter.
I mean it's just the basic Jonestown retelling (Koolaid, cult with father figure, etc) that was what the original Ultraviolence video was supposedly about. Didn't seem to go much deeper than that. The second half was just them being in heaven or wherever.
I knew it was based on cults because of the Kool-Aid, but I just didn't see how it related to the song AT ALL and the meaning of the other girls. It seems as though they were the only two people there so why tf is he (or Lana) imagining all these girls?
Ok y'all, play Honeymoon over Freak. It's life changing.
When the lyric "Dreaming away your life..." is sung, it's when they are dancing in heaven and it's literally so pretty.
I didn't know why I had such high expectations again when she hasn't released a really good video since... well, Tropico. I guess that's her vision and she stays true to it BUT she's one of those few artists that really need a good direction from some other figure. Just remember most of the videos from the Born To Die era + Ride and Tropico. It's not true that she doesn't have such a high budget now. Like, she bought herself a house in Malibu...
Back to 'Freak', I guess that it would have been better if the video ended when the song ended. The recycling of footage in such a literal way doesn't make any sense at all.
