They shouldn't. It's a security concern, don't be cheap and go to an unauthorized repair service. There's places outside of Apple that do repairs that don't result in this issue.

Exactly. The fingerprint scanner is a valid region of concern regarding unauthorized parts. And people who claim they don't have an Apple Store near them, mail it in or go to an authorized repair center. You can always mail it in and live without a phone for a few days.

Yeah. Now that Touch ID can be used for payments, you want to have the repair done by a reputable company, preferably Apple. Or, you could just take care of your phone and not have to worry about getting parts replaced.

Messy. Then again you'd think third-party tampering would instantly negate the warranty & instructions? Seems like something that would get dismissed, but then again people are always looking for a reason to get some of Apple's coin.

I think it does void the warranty, I remember reading about it a while back when I was considering getting my 4S' white glass replaced with lavender colored glass

Seems legit to me. Apple already has a reputation for releasing software that cripples older phones, so it's not beyond them to find a reason to brick their own phones when people don't give Apple all their money.

Getting someone to fix your phone who isn't certified is breaking the Warranty

Any damage it causes is your issue. It's like when people buy third party chargers and want Apple to replace the dead phone. If you break the warranty apple don't have to do anything. Pay the extra $30 for Apple or someone who knows what they are doing, and you won't have to pay hundreds for a new phone.

The issue is unauthorized repair centers. Same applies to car warranties if you buy new. You have to get it repaired at the dealer or an authorized mechanic. Is it a scheme to get money? Maybe. But you have to consider the fact that special training and certification is needed on top of the correct replacement parts.

Also, any software update to a device has the potential to brick said device. The odds are small but it happens to any computer system.

They also have a reputation for releasing software for 3 different devices at once, for all carriers. If anybody expects an iPhone 4s to run as efficiently as an iPhone 6s, those people are morons. Smartphone tech hasn't leveled out yet. The yearly increases put even last year's model in the distance. Let's not even talk 4 years. The fact that the 4s is still even getting updates is amazing.

It's either update to the latest OS or remain and be vulnerable to security threats and miss out on new features. Apps stop supporting older iOSes as well. And some apps don't work unless you're updated to the most recent version.

In that case, I think Apple shouldn't let older phones update to software that will substantially degrade performance, especially if they can only barely handle the software. I would rather have an older version of an iOS that runs fast than the newest one that has more features but slows down my device.
