This or education. From my knowledge of overpopulation, most Western countries are beginning to plateau in terms of population growth, but it's underprivileged countries, that don't have great education or options for birth control, which are still rapidly contributing to the world's overpopulation (OMG how many of you are saying it's a myth
).
In some poverty-stricken countries, it's become a bit more "popular" for couples to have 5+ children so that there are more children to send off to do paid work, so that there is more income coming into the household, and potentially more chance for the children to grow up and be able to take care of their parents.
I don't know the statistics off the top of my head but I'm certain that this is a highly ineffective way of getting out of poverty or maintaining a decent life
