The Grammys producer spilled the tea on how they want performers to perform new material so that they'd stand out from other award shows where the artist just performs their current single

Interesante.
Honestly unless Ari or Nicki perform, I won't even watch. I'm betting Meeks life that they won't, but hopefully I'm wrong.

Why don’t the AMAs move the needle like the Grammys do? Do you have a theory on that?
I have a theory on everything; half the time it’s totally off-base. I believe—I’ve said this before, but nobody listens, and I don’t even want to tell them this so that they can try and figure it out—but I believe that because of what we do with our artists, they capture the imagination of the viewer. By the time an act comes to the Grammys, with all the music television that’s available now, they’ve probably done that single 14 times. There’s no novelty to it, it’s usually over, and if t’s not over, it’s almost over. Our nomination period ends September 30, so there’s a built-in three-month obsolescence with the single. So what we try and do are things with an artist that elevates who they are, and doesn’t just throw them on a stage and they do that single. Like what we did two years ago with Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Sting and the Marleys doing “Locked Out of Heaven.” However worked any of these things are, they get new life from what we do with it.
That’s a great instance.
It’s true. “Get Lucky” was over by the time the Grammys were on last year. You saw a number that you never thought you’d see on television. You saw Pharrell, Daft Punk, Stevie Wonder and Nile Rodgers. You saw a stage full of people doing this amazing version of this song—I’m getting a chill just thinking about it. That thing spiked like crazy. Because as many people that had hooked into that album, all of a sudden it was born again with that version. And that’s what we do, and I’d love to think that to some extent the artistic community trusts us more than they once did. What I’ve tried to do over the years—and it goes back a long way—is build a trust in an artist so that we can develop ideas collaboratively. Whether I’m talking to the artist directly, which is what I like to do, or the label or managers—there are occasions where I have to say, “It’s not workin’. I really want to have you on the show, but I don’t want to do that.” And then they say, “Then I don’t want to do that.” But we don’t lose people. We ultimately find the middle ground; we find a balance. And I really think that we have crossed that bridge with artists.
And there’s another factor. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think artists believe that there’s more at stake with a Grammy performance, and they know that the other artists who are going to be on the show are gonna feel the same way. However that expresses itself—whether it’s obvious or subtle or intrinsic or extrinsic—I think they push harder to do something really great on our show, because it’s going to have a more lasting effect on their careers.

The part in red bold has me thinking a lot about Nicki's infamous performance and the later bad reception he gave it here:

You’ve made a list of your favorite moments. Do you have any particular disappointments? You knew that was coming.
I was not proud of what we did with Nicki Minaj three years ago. I thought that was a disappointment both in terms of what we did and to an extent what she did. I’m not going to absolve us of any responsibility, but it just wasn’t good. If it had been controversial and good, I think I would have been proud of it. But we probably let out the string a little too much on that one.

But I'm not about to get into that because it'll just piss me off.

The Grammys thing really bothers me and I'm gonna talk about it. Nicki DID NOT WANT to perform Roman Holiday, she was NOT going to perform Roman Holiday, but she was ASKED to perform Roman Holiday. I'm guessing after that point, the committee just wished Nicki the best of luck with creating a performance for a heavily themed, decidedly unconventional and abrasive song that she didn't even seem to particularly like. There was so much time and doubtlessly so many opportunities to take a look at what Nicki was working on and give her some direction, and I am confident that the committee failed to follow through on any of these opportunities. In the worst case scenario, it's still better to pull the plug on the entire performance at the last minute than to offend the audience and embarrass everyone involved. The Grammys picked the song and approved Nicki's performance, and they are not taking responsibility for that part despite what this guy says.
All of that said, it's even MORE infuriating because her performance was actually really good, and the committee just sounds bitter over the poor public reception (I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY WERE EXPECTING BECAUSE EVERYTHING NICKI DID IN 2012 WAS RECEIVED POORLY). This guy didn't like her performance, and he's acting like his opinion writes her entire performance off, which is so insulting because it was actually a highlight in an otherwise dull night. The Grammys are declining and they would do well to be grateful, or at least polite, towards the few artists who still make unique contributions to their stage. The Grammys were not kind to Nicki and she knows it, but she's never been able to say it outright because of their disgusting monopoly over the industry. Traditionally no awards show compared to the prestige and significance of the Grammys, but incidents like this are literally trashing the academy's reputation and I haven't heard anyone say they were excited to watch the Grammys in years.
Like, fine, so you think Nicki's performance was trash. At least you it widened your eyes and got your mind going. These other bitches have been boring for YEARS now. I'm really excited for when the academy loses what clout they have left and Nicki can do the right thing and stop working with them.

LIKE. The academy clearly has very specific expectations of their performers, and they clearly did not do what was in their power to help Nicki understand and meet those expectations. If the academy is going to be critical of their performers, they could at least pick easy songs to work with rather than ****ing Roman Holiday. The **** did they expect? **** out of here.
