Not really. They kept minimal things. They have to be applauded though for creating a new black identity. One that is their own. If you want to see preservation of black/Africa traditions in the new world look at the Caribbean and Latin America. From their food to their music it is undeniably African. The reason for the difference is very simple. Slaves in the US were encouraged to reproduce and create more slaves for the owner. In the Caribbean and Latin America the slaves were dying so frequently that they just replaced them with new slaves. Caribbean& Latin America = fresh batch therefore being able to retain more of their West African traditions, while the US slaves = were there longer and assimilated to American culture. Plus slavery ended much later in Latin America/Caribbean than US. I read some interview the other day where people in Brazil had great grandparents that were born slaves
