A lot of people I know stan for teams from states they're no even from. I know they don't Stan for the stats or else everyone would Stan for the Steelers since they have the most wins...what is it that makes people say "oh yeah, this is my team right here," and furthermore become passionate and invested in them as if they are someone famous who wins all the time like Lady Gaga?

Depends -- a lot of individual players have fans that follow them throughout college on up until they get drafted and from team to team if they get traded; same for certain coaches. Some are legacy fans -- they grew up with parents/grandparents stanning and followed suit. It varies I guess, but there are a number of ways you can end up supporting non-locally relevant teams.

Basically what Ascension said but for me its no different than picking a pop girl to stan for, it just clicks and cheering for anyone else doesn't feel right.

1. You follow college football first off, and then you'll naturally end up 'stanning' for a couple of great players who (naturally) end up getting drafted onto the best big league teams. So you follow them there as well.

2. Some just bandwagon the top ranked teams and eventually end up actually getting invested.

Another are the band wagoners. Like, NC fans were Seahawks fans last year because the Panthers were pathetic - but this year they are back to the Panthers because of their outstanding season losing only one game.

Steelers fans hate Bengals fans because of the long rivalry so they Stan for whoever goes against the team they hate, exc.

For me, it has become more of a game of who you rooting for to lose, exc.

I think he's talking about the people who live in states that don't have teams. There are a lot. I wish my state had a team Everyone here roots for the Broncos because Colorado is our next door neighbor.

Also by city...if you've lived in a city for much of your life, you will naturally gravitate toward that city's sports team(s).

I'm from NY and none of my favorite sports teams are from here. basically I liked the way most of them played and more than 1 player was my favorite as a kid. It was an attachment that never went away.

Some people by default choose the teams of their home state.

Some people choose the team their favorite college players end up on.

If your family members like a particularity team, you may end up liking them as well.

Or some take a strong liking to one particular player and dick rides whatever team they're on. Like some basketball fans do with lebron.

Family, the city you live, or if you like a player(s) on a team

I root for the Patriots because I'm a Bostonian and I love my city and state.

I like other teams, though (such as the Cardinals) becuase they have players who I genuinely like (for the Cardinals, Fitzergald is an example).

Also based on CFB players I really like. I loved seeing Mariota run the Ducks offense so I root for him now (but the Titans suck rn, lmao).

I was born and raised just outside of St. Louis, and still live there to this day.
By default, the teams from St. Louis or near the area (Cardinals, Blues, Illini, Mizzou, and formerly the Rams) are who I root for.

Other teams that have I root for on a regular basis: Steelers (now my #1 favorite), Bears (from the same state I'm from), Bills, and whoever plays New England or Seattle.
