Possibly, but you would think he'd have to go through the proper channels to get her officially declared dead for insurance etc., but I may just be thinking too much in line with my own cultural perspective where divorce isn't taboo and this type of situation is typically financially motivated.
Considering he had a "funeral" in their living room, he probably made no official report of her "death" at all and probably just wanted to be rid of her without the shame of divorce given that he had no way to gain financially with the way he went about it.
