People tend to fall into groups and scenes. It's likely that these couples meet like that. Hipster/hipster, jock/jock, prep/prep etc. It's also possible that they grew into something together and thus developed similar style.

I think it's an extension of the male ego, amplified by gay issues of attempting to find normalcy in a hetero society: to find someone who has an image resembling yours, as a since of comfort and safety.
