Okay, that's not how it happened at all. Kelly didn't want another album as successful as Breakaway. She said multiple times, even in her booklet for My December, that she "needed" to make that album to deal with what she was going through. She suffered of depression and the lowest point in her life during the Breakaway era, hence the song Irvine in which she sings to God about struggling with suicide. Her head didn't get too big, she wanted to not be the main pop girl anymore.
Also, Clive Davis is the same person that was against Breakaway and told Kelly that it would barely go gold. He even wrote in his bibliography (in his chapter devoted to Kelly) that she didn't want Behind These Hazel Eyes on the album, despite Kelly writing that song herself for the album... Don't give that eyesore that much credit for Kelly's success.
