It's "free" to the consumer, but the product itself was not free. Obviously to a forum that relies on Billboard for their information will not understand this, and would rather track the sales traditionally. It's 2016 now and that's frankly boring.

Guys, guys, guys, you know what, you needed to 1) look after the news on the album (I know many of yours jumped ship long time ago) 2) bother yourself and use your brains for a second to understand you don't need to register on Tidal or smth to download an album 3) pass the link, put your personal infos in and wait until album gets downloaded OR spy through Anti Diary's Room 8, enter it, find an link, insert this Samsung promo code on Tidal... Too much job for a standard user!
The fact it was downloaded 1 million times less than in a day, it's insane. You hardly realise that million in 15 hours is, erm, much? And about "every major artist would do that", well, like, EVERY? let's bet, I'ma wait until yours can pull it off. They won't, look at it, it sounds dumb, nobody will "pay themselves for a load of albums to get certified", it's not making money and money is everything here...for most of the players. And they don't "get paid for them by a sponsor", like Rihanna did, either. If it was that easy - "just find a big sponsor to pay for a load of albums and then market them to actual users", why won't everybody do this and succeed?.. Simply because they're not ones who'll dare to do this, "free" is a bad thing, unappropriate to so many people. Or they won't be accepted to collaborate, cuz, not that much of a brand. Or they're busy booking standard promo spots and making standard campaigns, doing 100th tv show in a row and promoting snacks, calling Sia, Max Martin and Dr Luke for hits, or ranting about how streaming is hurting the artistry, taking tracks off streaming services cuz "it's not fair, buy my album".

Bey wanted it to be a visual album so she did what she wanted.
Her album was released exclusively on Itunes so they gave her banners. Unlike other ( release through Tidal). Now you even complain about Itunes banner? it's like you turn your back on someone and complain why they dont support you.
At least 617k people decided to pay 16$ for BEYONCE,
