This sort of thing happens in the music industry all the time. I think almost every female pop diva is guilty of taking credit for something they didn't significantly contribute to from time to time. Madonna, Janet, Jennifer, Avril, Gwen...the list goes on. It's all about keeping up the appearance of credibility.
