Selena Gomez scores unfortunate reviews for new movie role
Quote:
It’s weird how extraneous the hitchhikers feels and they start to dominate what should be Rudd’s movie, with him taking a backseat to Roberts’s unconvincing romance with teen vixen Gomez. The pop princess, who showed promise in SPRING BREAKERS and packs a lot of star-power into her music videos (I don’t mean that sarcastically) is badly miscast. She’s not a capable enough performer to go head-to-head with Rudd and Roberts, with her line readings often quite bad. At best, she’s bland. At worst, she’s embarrassing. A more seasoned performer was needed.

Moreover, Selena Gomez, as a sassy hitchhiker the boys pick up along the road, is pretty unbearable. Her character steers the movie away from “Harold and Maude” dark comedy into the more conventional precincts of the feel-good flick.

Selena Gomez's painted on jeans give a stronger performance than she does as a smart-mouthed hitchhiker Trevor falls for.

The supporting characters are just types, but Ehle invests her dedicated mother with a wry wit that pairs nicely opposite Rudd’s thoroughly charming turn. The picture loses a bit of snap when she exits, despite Gomez trying her hardest to fill the gap. Cursing like an edgy standup with Tourette’s, smoking and smoldering in a low-key flirtation with Roberts, she can’t help but feel like a third wheel on this journey, despite a third act reveal of her character’s own daddy issues.

Thank goodness Selena's music career is on poinT.

She doesn't pick scripts that do a good job of showcasing her acting range, which is not really that much but these reviews are brutal.

A few years ago I definitely wouldn't be saying this but she's definitely a better singer than an actress these days.

What an incredibly misleading thread. The last one wasn't critical of her acting, by the way, it was critical of the script. Also:

Selena Gomez glams up procedures as a hitchhiker they pick up, but she’s genuinely engaging as a quirky, damaged girl heading to Denver for art school.

Here Selena Gomez steps into the picture in a role that has gone over well at Sundance, though the compliment is somewhat backhanded, shaped by surprise that she is more than just Taylor Swift's BFF. But as Dot, a 21-year-old, heading to Denver, she adds an easiness to proceedings. So Trevor and Dot's romance blossoms, and it is credit to both actors that they make it a plausible one. For Selena Gomez it's a middle finger to anyone who thought she was simply pulled from the social media pages or Justin Bieber's back catalogue.

including a hitchhiker named Dot, played by Selena Gomez in a pleasantly salty performance.

Adding a surprising amount of humor and filthiness to the proceedings is Selena Gomez as Dot, a girl hitchhiking to Denver, Colorado with just as crude of a sense of humor and just as profane of a mouth mouth as Trevor. The two make quite a cute, unlikely couple, and Gomez never feels as out of place as you might expect a pop music star to be in a movie like this. She also doesn’t feel like she’s trying too hard to impress anybody.

It is not surprising that Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts are very good in THE FUNDAMENTALS OF CARING. Selena Gomez, though, surprised me. She opens her mouth in this, starts talking, and I was immediately like, "Wait, who is that?" I had not seen this version of her.

It actually does, it's called editing. You have no idea how much editing can improve a performance.

One of these is merely an observation that they are not used to seeing Selena in a role like this. Another one merely states that she's not as bad as expected to be given that she's mostly a musician now-a-days and also states that "she's not trying to too hard to impress anybody" which can also be interpreted as an insult.

Well, the American Selena (I'm talking about Madonna rn) wasn't the most acclaimed actress either, so it's not that big of a deal

You obviously don't understand anything about acting if you think that was an insult. It means it was a nuanced, subtle performance, not a showy, over the top one.
Not used to seeing Selena in a role like this =/= surprised me. "I have never seen this version of her" = she's a good actress. How else would you take a comment like that? If you read the tweet he responded to, you would know that he is praising her:

Yes she has received mixed reviews for the role but the good reviews outweigh the bad. I think it's quite sad that you made an effort to compile all these reviews to make Selena look bad.

A celebrity surprising someone because of their role, doesn't automatically make them GOOD in that role, just different. That guy seems to like her in it though, so kudos for that I guess.
They were all on Rotten Tomatoes, because they actually count as legitimate reviews for that website. No big effort to compile anything.

You still read through each and every one of them just to make a thread about someone you don't like. Sad.
