I'm probably wrong but I think they meant buying/recording songs that didn't make somebody else's album.

Put songs from previous albums on new albums. Like Britney did with Radar on Blackout and Circus.

Would also be useful for compilations/greatest hits, as an artist's songs (especially hits) are usually included on numerous compilations.

Also do deluxe versions exist?
