A man from Ohio has been jailed for a month after adopting a dog in an attempt to pass it off as his own, in order to get around a court order that would see his dog put down.
Jason Dotson's dog seriously injured the service dog of an elderly neighbor last October. The animal was deemed to be 'vicious and dangerous', and was ordered to be put to sleep.
The therapy dog was being walked by its owner, who has Parkinson's disease, and on a leash when the attack happened. It was so traumatized and badly injured that it won't be able to work again as a therapy dog.
Dotson, 32, decided he would try and fool the judge and get around his court order after concocting a plot to adopt a second dog that was similar to his own.
On the day of execution, the plan was to sacrifice the newly adopted pooch instead of his own dangerous pet.
Two days before his pit bull mix was due to be euthanized, Dotson went to the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and adopted Baby, a black and white dog who looked similar to his.
On the date of his dog's euthanization, Dotson brought Baby to the same facility he adopted her from just a few days before and tried to pass her off as the dog set to be killed.
Staff at the SPCA noticed immediately and recognized the new dog as one that had previously been living at the shelter until just days before.
When Dotson brought the dog back to the SPCA, they recognized the pooch as one that had been adopted just days earlier. Furthermore, upon checking they noticed the microchips on the dogs didn't match
Dotson's 'pit bull type dog' almost killed, Buddy, a medical therapy dog in an attack in October, 2015. It was so traumatized and badly injured that Buddy won't be able to work as a therapy dog again
I understand he wanted to save the life of his dog, but taking another one's life was not the solution. He should have taken care of his dog's anxiety problems. If you can't raise a dog, don't have one.
I would have done the exact same thing or more to save my dog's life so I won't judge.
But:
a) Your dog won't be sentenced to death here even if it bit another dog/person.
b) You wouldn't go to jail for euthanizing a dog.
c) Dogs aren't even chipped to begin with
