The United States of America has the most English speakers out of any other country in the world and the language has played a vital role in our history and development of our society, yet there is no official language of the US.
Should English be granted as the official language of the USA?
No, because it's not really necessary to do so. It's already the de-facto official language, and doing it now over 200 years after our founding would only come off as a political statement.
No, that would set us back so many years. We really shouldn't have an official language, IMO. We pride ourselves for being diverse and (occasionally) accepting of all cultures' beliefs, including their preferred language.
That will just give the racist xenophobes more reason to come with the "If you're in America speak English" bs we're better not having an official language
Countries like the UK can have English as the official language because 98% of the population can speak it, 99% of ppl in Spain speak Spanish, 95% speak German in Germany etc.
Only 80% of Americans speak English, so it wouldn't be representative of the country.
i mean, the country was built on the idea of being a refuge for people of all backgrounds. obviously, this isn't actually the case but it would still be completely backwards to make english the official language.
Yes... doesn't mean you have to speak it... it is already the unofficial language. Basically all official documents and legal matters are done through english

80% is a pretty big majority but ok Not saying I'm passionate about making an official language just saying
