Though the album was completed in early 2020, Hunter held the release of the album back for several months, instead opting to reach out to various artists, producers and critics for feedback. He first reached out to close friends Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift, before reaching out to Lady Gaga at the Critic's Guild Awards in 2020. "I was nervous to go up to her because she is and had been an inspiration to me for so long... but she actually came up to me first, to talk about how much she loved my first record and how she appreciated how I understood my artistic vision, as well as how she voted for me during Platinum Hit 7 and 8, saying that the Swifties were demonic satanists that needed to be stopped." He later reached out to writer's for Time, Rolling Stone and Slate, who gave their early feedback on the record. Hunter also attempted to reach out to Mariah Carey, who he said responded with "I don't know it."
The album sold 643,000 copies in its first week of release in the U.S., making it debut at number 1 in the Billboard 200, staying there for 6 weeks, a large improvement off of Odyssey's No. 2 debut. It sold 1,331,000 copies in its debut week worldwide, becoming the biggest debut that year, later being overtaken by HJHR's sophomore album later that month. Domestically, it sold 2,525,000 copies by the end of 2020, becoming the third best-selling album that year, behind Lovesong's debut album which sold 3,420,000. Going into 2021, the album experience a resurgence due to the commercial success of its singles, returning to the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 for 27 more weeks, outlasting debuts from Achilles and Ventitonic. It finished 2021 as the second best-selling album of the year with 1,970,000 copies sold, behind Samantha's junior album Set Sail Pt. III.
