NBC eyeing 'Chicago Law' spinoff from 'Chicago P.D.'
Quote:
NBC is considering a fourth installment of its increasingly successful franchise of Chicago-set procedural dramas.
Network execs have had early conversations with exec producer Dick Wolf about the possibility of launching “Chicago Law” set in the legal realm. A show focused on courts and lawyers would complement the existing series: “Chicago Fire,” which bowed in 2012, “Chicago P.D.,” now in its third season, and “Chicago Med,” which bowed in the fall.
NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke emphasized that the discussions are still in the conceptual stage and there is no script or writer attached for the spinoff. But the idea is that key characters for “Chicago Law” could be introduced in “Chicago P.D.,” much as the other spinoffs came from planted episodes of mothership “Chicago Fire.”
Chicago Fire pull in no less than 7M live viewers each week during it's current season.
Chicago P.D. pulls in at least 6M and Chicago Med pulls in at least 8M.
The project, which was discussed at the TCA panel for the three Chicago series, has now been put on fast-track development and officially given a title, Chicago Law.
Spearheaded by Wolf, I hear the new installment is eyed for a potential launch during the 2016-17 season, likely in midseason, as had been the plan for both previous Chicago spinoffs. I hear the idea is to have ADA characters appear on Chicago PD this season to plant seeds for the legal offshoot. “You may see, in the same way you saw in the last three years, some people doing legal things that would give an insight into where that could go,” Wolf hinted at TCA last week.
Well...at least it's planned for midseason (early 2017) instead of the fall, I guess. Still, I think it should be more like fall 2017 to stagger the series debuts more.
When L&O tried to go beyond 3, Trial by Jury and LA both were 1 season and done. Oh, and Conviction.
CSI never had 4 on at a time, since Cyber started after Miami and NY were cancelled.
NCIS had NCIS Red planned but didn't move forward with it.
