This isn't true anymore. ISPs are removing contracts in favor of non-subsidized plans. Americans pay just as much as the rest of the world now, but in monthly installments or full pay.
Contracts still exist but they are much more expensive in the long run, meaning you pay more than the value of the phone.
And Apple and Google along with many tech companies have said they be moving more operations into the US.
