It was black for what seemed like days; my memories betrayed me as I tried to open my eyes to the sight of a burning cottage surrounding me, only to be relieved by the sight of a picturesque-blue sky askew by the tall redwoods.

I made it?

I was gasping for smoke-free air while trying to sit up to assess my current situation. The cottage: it was nothing but charred stones and broken pieces of ash-colored wood, but, more importantly, was no longer on fire.

How long was I out? What felt like, at most, a week of unconsciousness was less than a few hours after the flames died out. My body was bruised and burned, but I was still able to muster up the strength to stand; not entirely straight, but it’s better than being hobbled or dead at this point.

Some of the stones were still hot, so it couldn’t have been more than two hours of being unconsciousness. Still, it made it difficult to traverse back into the shambles of what used to be my home. Years I’ve spent building my safe haven only to have it burned to the ground in minutes. I clawed through the wreckage for more than an hour, hoping to find clues as to what the cause for this destruction was, but to no avail. My mind was spinning, racking with grief and confusion. My memories were like shadowy images dancing before a black screen; if there was something important I should've remembered, I forgot it almost instantly before the fire started.

And that man… who was he? And how did he know my whereabouts? This is stressful!

I had to calm down and recover from my traumatic experience, but without a safe haven to call my own, I was lost.

been writing 2 stories of mine for about 4 months now and it's actually really difficult. I'm a beginner and it's just for fun tho
