The info was wrong. The original piece of information said that there are two big female roles for new characters in EVIII that took the attention focus from the main trio (Rey-Kylo-Finn). People who saw TFA loved the new trio so they are rewriting the movie so the cast feels balanced and the trio gets more screentime.

So now this will go against Spielberg movie, Avatar 2 and 1 month after Justice League while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 have the whole summer for themselves.

The info about too many female lead characters was mislead. It's actually too many new characters and less focus on the actual protagonists, which deviated in less screentime for Rey, Finn and Kylo. The audience loved those characters and they are adding more weight into them. The new female characters are staying, they will just no longer "compete" with the main trio for the attention focus.

Please do not post the "too many female characters" thing again to try and drag. It's been clarified, move on.

If the new reason is the true tea then it does seem like there's very little co-operation between JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson. The latter one was trying to write his separate own movie when, as Disney just told him, he is supposed to continue the story that JJ and Kasdan started. Lucasfilm clearly lacks a cohesive plan for this new trilogy.

JJ has already read the script (he's not even a writer on this episode) and praised it saying it was incredible and wished he was the one directing it. If you don't think Disney has this trilogy outlined then you're just absurd

Disney didn't expect the movie to be this well received and the new trio to be universally liked, so they planed new characters for E8 just in case the audience didn't respond well to Rey, Kylo and Finn. Now that they know what fans and the public liked, they can readjust their vision for the new episode. The movie is not getting remade from scratch, just a few changes.

And the Episode 8 script was already written and in J.J.'s hands when he was directing TFA.

Bad move, Avatar 2 is EXTREMELY tough competition. Literally the Adele of movies. Cute how some are saying no one cares for it when it's one of the most anticipated sequels ever. Star Wars might keep up with Avatar in the U.S., but worldwide it doesn't stand a chance.

The Avatar movie is likely to get delayed as well to Spring/Summer 2018 anyway.

Ehm Xmas 2017 means the Han Solo spin-off will get pushed too considering it was schedule on May 2018 . At least they will focus on Finn and Poe

Good. I'd rather see more of Rey/Finn/Poe/Kylo than some shoehorned Asian girls who are just there as an obvious ploy to make more money in China.

Also, Avatar 2 is no competition. The first one was only so huge because it revolutionized the 3D landscape. Now people are used to 3D, plus it's been 8 years and no one cares anymore. There haven't been side stories (shows, books, comics, etc) to keep the Avatar hype going, as compared to say, STAR WARS which survived for decades on these side stories.
