In the Sag Awards era, the only "supporting" bids who were pushed to lead are for movies where the studio tried to play that No One was lead - Whale Rider and The Reader, so the titular whale rider and reader were nominated in lead.
Carol and Danish Girl, the studio and thus the voters were easily able to rationalize by saying Blanchett and Redmayne are lead so the other was supporting. One may disagree, but they had an actual argument for the case.
!! This is what I was thinking in terms of the biggest argument they had, that both Alicia and Rooney's character were the supporting part of the movies.
Needless to say, I love them both. Either winning would be great. Prefer Alicia at this point.

Just finished watching Racing Extinction The documentary is packed with strong messages. Humans are the sole CAUSE of mass extinction The song really made me cry. Here's hoping for Manta Ray to pull a surprise and win the best original song although Diane already has it in bag
People dont understand that the academy are not discriminating when they nominate actors. The way these award shows work is that whoever has a major studio behind them that is pushing hard for that nomination and spending money on a campaign, will get nominated. whoever gets the biggest push wins. if will or idris had more support they too could have been nominated and could have won if they cared enough. thats the way it works, just look at any weinstein-winning movie/actor/song/etc, he PUSHES when he wants them to win.
Since the Academy didn't give up as a result of internet's hard try about OscarsSoWhite, I am hoping the same will happen about rewarding DiCaprio. Fassbender ***** on him and should be the rightful winner, hopefully they'll do the right thing once more.
