We are just American by nationality; African American is an ethnicity, not nationality.

Why are white Americans called Americans, and black Americans given the extra caveat of "african americans?"

Time to educate you sis
The simple answer
: WHITE SUPREMACY
White people are the majority in this country,so they created these racial categories for ethnic people so they could categorize and keep track of us. Of course they aren't going to call themselves European-American.Most White people still think their people/ancestors own this country, and they feel that they are the true natives. We as African-Americans didn't name ourselves that.
We actually went through many names before arriving to this point.
We were Nig gers first, then Sambos,Mulattoes, Negroes, Afro-Americans and the African-American. Now mostly called Black Americans.

And that's another issue as well, people not being able to differentiate between race, nationality and ethnicity and also messy classifications that blur the lines as well as variances between countries that place heavier importance over certain types of classifications -- in the US, people were identified by and divided by race; other places, people are separated by ethnicities/cultures.

Ok, so say I add the caveat that Elon Musk is the most successful WHITE African American in the world.
That would mean there are also just Black African Americans in a separate category.
Erasing the color would still leave the same result.
Calling him the most successful American who originated from an African country would also get that result.
I don't see why what I'm saying isn't just logical to some people...

Gotta admit that a lot of it does come from white Americans wanting to distance themselves from other races.
It's the same reason for the whole "Hispanic /Latino" thing. Yet Hispanic is anything relating to Spain. And Latino implies a connection to the Latin /Roman empire, a European empire. Technically a white Canadian could be as Latin American as a mestizo from Peru. There was a time when white Americans just drew lines. Like, how racially different is someone like Marco Rubio or Shakira (considered Hispanic) from Jeb Bush or Madonna (considered white)?

Also another thing, the White man also came up with racial classification.
White people are always talking about "lets not see race","lets look at the future" , "it' s 2016" etc etc. They dont wanna look back on the past, because they dont wanna feel or accept White guilt on what they've done to countless other indigenous peoples...but it's so ironic, because once again,a White man created Racial classifications
like Negroid, Caucasoid, Mongoloid
They started this great divide between the races. Not us

Your perspective is biased because you only speak English (I'm guessing). There are similar racial terms in other languages...

IDK, were your ancestors forcibly taken from their homelands with their cultures/languages stripped and with the remnants of those various tribal cultures/languages/traditions blending with those imposed upon and learned from European captors over the course of hundreds of years, developing into a new ethnicity altogether?

Whoa, I'm not too sure if you're trying to "clock" me or what..
But yes, my two great grandparents were. Both were First Nations (Oji-Cree).
Most people know, that Canada/America were bombarded by Europeans taking over the land. Building civilizations. The First Nations never had a chance to build a modern (then modern day) civilization. Europeans literally stole the land that didn't belong to them. If anything they could have taught First Nations to build houses/start up businesses etc.. Instead it was the opposite of that.
Europeans forced First Nations to live on reserves, took away children and sent them to residential school, forced English onto them, forced Christianity onto them, took away the culture and livelihood of our First Nations. The end to all of that was not even that long ago either. Perhaps the 60's/70's.
If Europeans didn't come to Canada/US. The people, MY people would have one of our languages (more than likely Cree language) as our official language, we would have our traditions/culture still.
That was long ago, this is now. I honestly can't imagine what Canada and us would look like in 2016 if Europeans did not steal it. Would it be look like modern India/Arab country? Would it look like modern Europe? Would it look like modern Mexico? Modern Russia? WHO KNOWS?!
And by the way before religion was forced into First Nations, being gay/transgendered was 100% acceptable, and was praised majorly. Still like that today too, somewhat.

Exactly
My mom is African-American,but my father is Cuban/Dominican,and even though my daddy is Latino,he's Still Afro -Latino decent(mostly). He has some mixed blood like most Hispanics, but he's considered Black.(like Zoe Saldana)
If you go to a lot of Latin counties, you'll actually find Spanish speaking Black people who look African-American,and you'll have white looking Hispanics too..but in those country they classify by color
I know some Puerto Ricans who look just like light skinned black people, but they SWEAR they aren't Black. The self hate is real with Dominicans and Colombians too. they get offended at being called Black =/
Like if Beyonce wasn't American, and she was born in Puerto Rico, she'd just be looked at as Brown latina.

No I was just explaining why the African continental ancestry is included in the label of the "African American" racial classification/ethnicity. Your comment seemed to be an attempt to mock that label ignoring the circumstances and reasons for it.

Yeah racial classification with African slave descendants is so messy because of how different countries addressed race/cultural groupings.

Elon Musk is an outstanding person. His ideas seem quite unreachable and crazy sometimes but he has done so many things we didn't think that would be possible before. The Hyperloop is a vision i just can't imagine being in a usable stage at some point but you never know. He wants to reach the unreachable and is actually a humble and generous person. That's how progress in technology should be mad, to help humankind and not with profit being the first priority in mind

Why are you blaming everything on white people as though they're responsible for what happened many years ago? I guess all Jews should hate Germans for the holocaust

Not me giving a serious answer to the OP, wondering about ATRL discussing Elon Musk for 5 pages, without knowing that this thread has 5 pages for a whole different reason.
The never ending discussion. + the report. It's too early in the morning for this

omg. this post gave me cancer. try reading a history book (no, blogs don't count) before you just spout "white people bad. only white people are ever bad and white people are all bad in every way."
