I think Zayn is going for pure/experimental R&B whereas Liam is going for pop-R&B/hip-hop.

I didn't know Liam was into R&B, I thought he was into alternative/indie pop/rock/britpop

He loves hip-hop and R&B. He has a diverse taste but as he's grown up urban music is what he's gravitated towards and when Lunchmoney Lewis worked on his Drag Me Down remix, he said Liam had a huge knowledge and respect for the hip-hop genre.

I'm so proud of him.

He loves R&B and so does Zayn. I think thats why they were close friends.
I think they will work together in the future again.
