The number of votes he got is besides the point. He was promoting that ideology during an election, whilst representing a party. Essentially trying to get votes and get his seat based on those views. It wasn't personal, it was from a political stand-point. You need to remember when exactly those comments were made. What he says now though, is indeed a personal opinion, because he's in the house as himself. Which tbh, isn't even worth defending to begin with because it's still a gross opinion.
