It was TOTALLY a rehash of Episode IV. I understand why, it was the safe move to make, and I really hope that Episode VIII is a major milestone like Episode V was...
but come ON, how many times are we going to have to sit through the Skywalker family drama, father/son betrayal, dying isolated mentor/young protoge crap? It's just the same story over and over and over again.

This was my complaint as well. We are not alone. Type "force Awakens a new hope" in Google and YouTube and you see tons of articles and videos about this. I enjoyed the movie, but I did not like the lazy writing. Disney had tons of money for this sequel, and all they could come up was this rehash. There are so many worlds out there but all they could come up was the same desert planet, droid, abandoned hero, cantina, death star 3.0, and masked villain.
I also did not like what they did to our old heroes. They made all men here losers, with Luke being the biggest loser of all. They made him appear like this craven who hid away from everybody because he failed as a teacher. Han and Chewie went back to becoming a smuggler. They're supposed to be war heroes!
And what's up with that Leia hugging Rey in the end? Did they forget that Leia never met Rey before that scene? Her husband just died and Chewie was his bestfriend, but inexplicably she went on to hug a complete stranger (Rey). Chewie deserved that hug. Chewie was more important to Han than Rey will ever be.
