As an ex-fat myself, she's right. However, he should solve his problems before he's going to extensively exercise. The body is (often) a reflection of the mind. He should first fix his problems, then work out.

Drinking and smoking do not affect a body either directly or visibly. Gaining fat is very visible and is seen as something bad in this society, therefore fat people are often not happy in their skin. I'm not talking about people who are a little bit overweight, but the (morbidly) obese. Of course there are exceptions, but comparing fatness with drinking and smoking is like comparing apples with oranges. Completely different things.

Who's offended by his weight? Being morbidly obese is not comparable to being gay whatsoever. Obviously we should promote people being happy in their skin but there really is no excuse for being severely overweight. Its not natural and its a choice.
